ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

Since the inception of Gurukul Ayurvedic Mahavidyalaya in 1922, the postgraduate department of Shalya Tantra has been functioning as an exemplary locus of patient care as well as surgical training. The department is committed to provide the best possible care to patients who require surgical and parasurgical services at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. The department is well equipped with OPDs (General Shalya, Anorectal & Orthopedic), a Minor OT (Kshara Karma, Kshara Sutra, Agnikarma), a Raktamokshana Unit, and a Major OT(Shastra Karma).

The Department of Shalya Tantra deals with surgical aspects of the system through imparting quality patient care, teaching, training and various research activities concerning surgery. Specialized treatment is provided for Arsha and Bhagandara with Kshara Karma and Kshara Sutra therapy, Gridhrasi, Sandhivata, Kadara, Vatakantaka, Charmakeela, Avabahuka, Tennis Elbow etc. by Agnikarma, Raktamokshana, Marma Chikitsa and Shalya Karma therapies. The Department also provides treatment for chronic non healing ulcers, peripheral vascular disorders by Jalaukavacharana method. There is optimum management
of Bhagna, Mutra Ashmari (Urinary Calculi), Vriddhi roga (Hydrocele, Hernia etc.) and other general surgical disorders.

5. To provide excellent patient care service by using evidence based practice of ksharasutra in the field of ano-rectal surgery and promoting parasurgical procedures such as Agnikarma,
ksharakarma, raktamokshana, leech therapy etc.
6. To encourage young minds to reach their full potential in the area of shalya karma (General surgery), kshara avum anushastra (para surgery), asthi, sandhi, and marmagata diseases (bone and joint injuries).
7. To emphasize quality and value based education to obtain optimum skill in the field of shalya tantra.
8. To provide best possible education programmes at UG and PG level as well as knowledge
dissemination programmes for faculties.

Facilities:

1. General Shalya: This unit deals with General Surgical and Para-surgical procedures and
treatment of patients.
2. Anorectal Unit: This unit provides best and effective treatment with Special Kshara Karma,
Ksharasutra and Agnikarma procedures to patients suffering from Anorectal diseases like Piles, Fistula-in-ano, Fissure-in-ano etc.
3. Orthopedic Unit: This unit provides best and effective treatment for various Fractures,
Dislocations, Bone and Joint diseases with well equipped Orthopedic instruments.
4. Jalaukavacharana Unit: This unit provides best and effective treatment through
Jalaukavacharana Therapy to patients.
5. Agnikarma Unit: This unit provides treatment through Agnikarma to patients suffering from
Dadru, Vicharchika, Gridhrasi, Sandhivata, Kadara, Tennis Elbow etc. diseases.
6. Marma Chikitsa Unit: This unit deals with the management of various conditions with the use of marma therapy (stimulation of marma pressure points).
7. Cancer Unit: This unit has been established with the aim of providing ayurvedic treatment to patients with various types of growth or cancer.

Courses:

A) Undergraduate Level:
Theoretical as well as practical teaching, training and guidance in the subject of Shalya Tantra is provided to students of BAMS. There is an excellent environment for the students to learn various surgical procedures inside the operation theater.

B) Postgraduate Level:
PG Scholars are provided with every possible method to see & learn the various surgical disorders & perform the operative procedures. Various PG Research works as approved by the institutional ethical committee are in progress following standard guidelines provided by CCIM as well as the Uttarakhand Ayurved University.

C) Postgraduate Diploma in Ksharsutra:
Theoretical as well as practical teaching, training and guidance in the subject of kshara karma are provided to PG diploma students.
